   Born in Dieppe, Richard Simon, an oratorian priest, was one of the founders of biblical criticism and was the first to present that topic in French. Solicitous, in his Histoire critique du Vieux Testament (1678), in reevaluating a tradition that previously was based only on text, he was more violently attacked by jacques bossuet and by the Jansenists than by the Protestants, with whom he considered doing a translation of the Bible. Put on the index of forbidden books issued by the Catholic Church and expelled from the oratory, he left a Histoire critique de texte (1689), des versions (1690), and des principaux commentateurs (1693) du Nouveau Testament.
